How to Create Meaning and Purpose in Our Daily Lives

Concentrate your energy to influence areas that are under your control. This distinction will make you stronger, more successful and happier. If you make use of the tips provided here, you really can create more meaning in your life. Don’t forget to notice the meaning that is already in your life. Maybe you find meaning in that one flower that somehow grew from between the cracks of the sidewalk. Maybe there is meaning in looking over rolling hills that seem to stretch on forever.

how to create meaning in life

Every skill and every inquiry, and similarly, every action and choice of action, is thought to have some good as its object. This is why the good has rightly been defined as the object of all endeavor […]Everything is done with a goal, and that goal is “good”. Thus, a sense of significance permeates every dimension of meaning, rather than standing as a separate factor. The ultimate fate of the universe, and implicitly of humanity, is hypothesized as one in which biological life will eventually become unsustainable, such as through a Big Freeze, Big Rip, or Big Crunch. One business executive, for example, had the habit of taking his wife and children on luxury vacations to exotic locations.

You are, therefore you matter

Things like acts of kindness, helping or showing compassion to others not only make us feel happy, but also give us a sense of significance, and therefore contribute to meaning. Throwing up your hands and concluding that the question of the meaning of life is simply unanswerable—by you, at least—is the easy response. But you can make your quest for meaning manageable by breaking it down into three bite-size dimensions, and then considering each one in turn. Without a driving purpose, it’s easier to abandon goals and set plans aside. If you’re looking for more science-based ways to help others discover meaning, this collection contains 17 validated meaning tools for practitioners. Use them to help others choose directions for their lives in alignment with what is truly important to them.

Nature of meaning in life

Experimental laboratory studies have demonstrated a temporal relationship between positive mood and sense of meaning. Inducing a positive mood results in higher reports of meaning (for a review, see Heintzelman & King, 2014). Psychological researchers conduct research and measure psychological constructs such as happiness, depression, and intelligence.

Research on the act of writing about personal goals started with Pennebaker’s research on traumatic writing (Pennebaker, 1997; Pennebaker and Chung, 2011). It was shown that writing about traumatic events was related to a decrease in depression and an increase in mental health (Gortner et https://ecosoberhouse.com/article/how-to-create-meaning-in-life-best-ways-and-practices/ al., 2006; Pennebaker and Chung, 2011). King (2001) suggested that future-oriented writing about one’s “best possible self” has a similar positive effect on an individual’s well-being, without the short-lived negative effect on mood that occurred after writing about traumatic events.

Develop and foster social relationships (purpose, significance)

A sense of self-understanding is the key to living a meaningful life. This understanding involves comprehension of things like self-attributes, personality, habits, beliefs, and roles. In order to have a unified understanding of yourself, working on life narratives might be a powerful tool given that narratives help us re-evaluate our past experiences into our current and future life context. We constantly ask ourselves whether life is worth living, whether we have value as a human being, whether we are connected to others who we care about, and whether we have goals that we strive for, all of which refer to different aspects of meaning. And I look forward to a future which will feel as meaningful as it does today.

Based on the theorizing above, it should be stressed that in the intervention students formulate goals that they find important, not ones that others (parents, peers, or friends) find important or that are pursued solely for reasons of status. In the instructions in the intervention, the students are advised to choose goals that they think are important and want to pursue and not to choose goals that others (parents, peers, and friends) think are important. In order to make sure that they do not choose goals that will be detrimental to themselves or others, they are also advised to not describe an ideal life that includes harming themselves or others.

You are much more likely to regret something you didn’t do, than something you did do. When you take a risk, the worst thing you can end up with is a life experience and a story to tell, but chances are you’ll end up with something even better than that.
